Kinda saddened that the cover turned out, well, differently, than the original mock-up. Rough, rustic and textured was my initial thought but I was ok with the designer wanting to exchange the rustic headline/deck font with one of our standard fonts, then extending the right side of the map to accommodate refers to inside stories. Foolishly altering the color scheme, however, was all me. But with the illo’s journey through toning (quality and output) and re-cropping/repositioning a few other things didn’t quite translate either. Maybe it was the distraction of an impending ice storm, the full moon, or someone (ahem) dropping a shiny crystal ball… onto a thoroughly cured and hardened concrete floor. :/ Either way, lesson learned. Onward and forward…

Mayor Ballard & The Quest for Illinois Business
A deep discussion about blogs, PayPal and the error of Dreamweaver was interrupted by one perturbed editor, cautiously assigning me a dreaded “Caricature” (vs a much appreciated “Portrait”) that would be due — not Friday for Sunday, or even Thursday for Friday — but tonight for tomorrow. I had one hour to cobble together a sketch that resembled Mayor Ballard. The Deciders decided to ixnay the caricaturay during the daily meeting prior to seeing the sketch. Oh well. Twas a fun challenge/excercise anyway.
